The Lisbon Story

Created June, 1999

In fact, I first saw Wim Wender's movie "The Lisbon Story" in March, 1999, half an year after I visited this city. The movie sort of brought my nice memory about Lisbon back to me. I was there when the World Expo was taking place, so it might have been the worst time to visit there. Everything became so expensive and hotel is rarely available at that time. Maybe 1999 is a better year to visit Lisbon, when the expense of everything goes back to normal and Lisbon still looks brand new from the renovation they have done for the Expo98....And yes, the Lisbonians do speak some English if you can't speak any Portugese!
View of Alfama District
  • Lisbon is built on seven small hills. One of the most famous (and also ancient) hill is Alfama District. The maze-like streets and alleys make this district unique and very interesting. Overlooking Tagus River from top of the hill, is this scenery beautiful?
Wen-Hung in Alfama, Lisbon
  • I'm on the top of Alfama Hill.
View of Alfama from Bairro Alto
  • Another famous hilly district in Lisbon is Bairro Alto (the Old District). Now this distric becomes the chic nightlife district of Lisbon. It is also hilly and maze-like. This picture is viewing Alfama from Bairro Alto.
Belem Tower
  • Belem is the affluent surburb of Lisbon. It is built along the Tagus River. Belem Tower is one of the famous landmark of Belem
Wen-Hung in front of The Discovery Monument
  • This is me standing in front of the Discover Monument. Built less than 25 years ago, it is another famous landmark of Belem
Detail of the Discovery Monument
  • A lot of important figures in Portugal history are carved on this Discovery Monument, including Prince Enriques the navigator and Vasco Da Gama (the one who 'discover' India in 1498)
